However, I am not sure that this sort of thing has ever been tried before, the way we did it.
I don't recall ever coming across such an automated debate system and you're prolly right about there not being a huge demand.

Anyway, I was getting way ahead of myself with that idea.

I reckon my slugfest idea is a bit more implementable and could be an interesting method.

One rule I didn't mention, having assumed it, is that all posts must be polite. "Slugfest" is not intended to imply that we attack each other's person, only that the posts happen as fast as the participants like and without limit to the number of posts.

Sorry, I didn't follow the last debate past the first two opening posts - just didn't have the time for such a fun & frivolous topic.

I would like to see a little more on the lifestyle and/or philosophical side (without the politics and religion). Maybe something along the lines of:

    Parenting:
Discipline - Corporal punishment - Good or bad?
Technology - Should you control your child’s’ access to technology?
[I don’t have children so I am pretty limited in my thinking here]

    Green issues:
Paper vs plastic - Does it really make a difference?
Peak oil - Something to be concerned about or is it all just hype?
Reduce, reuse, recycle - How practical is this for the individual?
Food production - Is big agriculture needed to feed the world?
Technology - Cheap & disposable or expensive & long lasting?
[many more ideas but don’t want to overwhelm ;-) ]

And without getting into the politics of it all:
Capitalism - A system driven by greed or beneficial to the masses?

I would love to get involved on a topic that I am passionate about but unfortunately I do not have the time available for such a structured process (I presently have a very odd and inconsistent timetable).

Why not every 90 days instead?

Teams are out! Debates should be between individuals. I'm a loner, not a team player, and really prefer it that way.
    I'm mortified...

Yes, a debate surely should be something that challenges our thinking - a topic that could be useful to all of us.
    Something like, um...

"Dump your conventional business and go online"
    or
"Join the younger generation and learn the new SMS vocabulary, it's more efficient albeit lingistically abhorrent."
    or
"Wear a tie to a business meeting"

    Some initial thoughts from me:
    • I think it could be condensed time wise to keep it topical and intense.
    • The debate must have a structure that differentiates it from a normal thread of thoughts, ideas and passions
    • I prefer it to be team based because we seldom have that opportunity to work closely with our virtual colleagues.
    • I don't think you have to believe wholeheartedly in your topic because the art of debating is using words and arguments/logic to sway an audience. It tests different skills and forces one to be more concise and to the point and to think through concepts more carefully. Threads are there for quick posting and arguing about our passions.

    Perhaps a debate a quarter?

    I concur

I wasn't casting any nasturtiums on your English, I was expressing alarm at your proposal that debates be so infrequent.

I would never question your use of language.

Hehehe! Sorry, Dave, I didn't think of that.

I was already dead against the team idea long before the debate took place and, if anything, working with you made me turn the wick down a bit on my objection.

I think perhaps once a month - mid month?

It was a bit drawn out - I like Tim's idea of proposing in the morning and opposing in the afternoon

Topic wise.. I'm not so sure it should be something you're passionate about - that could be kinda like soapboxing? Depends on the subject.

Fun topics - it adds to the giggles if you're fighting for the opposite of what you believe..

but then again, my bull terrier is called Fluffy - so there's no doubting my affinity for the ridiculous!
