Thread: ADSL Woes

    ADSL Woes

I have an ADSL account through Incredible Connection, and my router is the latest Netgear model supplied by Telkom.

Generally the uptime has been very good in the two years or so that I have had the account, but the past few days have been very erratic.

The red light on the router comes on regularly, cutting the connection, and stays off for a few minutes, and then disappears of its own accord, restoring the connection for a few minutes, and so the cycle repeats itself.

I have pressed the reset button and I have cut the power to the router for a while, but the problem persists.

My problem is that I don't know where to start troubleshooting - is it the router itself, or do I call Telkom, or do I call Incredible Connection? I am dreading the inevitable situation where the one party blames the other party for the problem.

    What would you do?

My advice is to start with Telkom. Log a call and ask them to check the line.

Agreed. I'm with Mweb Adsl, and that's where I start.

    Neville,
I would buy a second ADSL router. They are not expensive. Then you have a spare.
Then set it up in place of your old one and see if you have any joy. If the same thing happens, then fight with Telkom

    Thanks guys.

Which number at Telkom must I call? In the telephone directory there are two possible numbers, as I see it - Data Services (10214) and Telkom Internet Support (10210).

I called 10210 and, after 10 minutes of no answer, I gave up.

Had the same experience the last few days.

Contacted the ISP (Axxess) who indicated that they do not have a problem and could even confirm the on/off connection.

Then logged a fault with Telkom (on their website) who came out next day and solved the problem.

I found the best way to log a Telkom fault is on their website - you get a nearly immediate confirmation by SMS with a reference number and there is also a possibility for a further follow-up request regarding the status and if you are not happy with the response.

ADSL line is registered in the business name and seems as if businesses are priority when attending to faults.

    Fairly efficient.

Hi Marius, I have also just registered the fault on the Telkom website, and received an reference number instantly. I can even track the progress of the log online.

I gave up waiting for an answer when dialling the two phone numbers.
